Philmont 2019

The Council has reserved four Crews at Philmont for the 2019 season.  The arrival date is June 15, 2019 and departure date is June 27, 2019.

Your crew may consist of:

  • Maximum 12 per crew – Minimum is 7
  • Majority of crew must be youth participants
  • Maximum number of adults (over 21) is four per crew

For planning purposes, the fee for a 12-day Expedition in 2019 will be $995 per person.

  • Reservation Fee :    $100.00           Due:  April, 15, 2018
  • Advance Fee:          $447.50           Due:  September 1, 2018
  • Balance Fee:           $447.50           Due:  January 1, 2019

In an effort to provide Philmont Experiences to the greatest number of people, we need your help as you select youth and adult participants to fill your contingent reservation. Philmont continues to have more individuals each year requesting an opportunity to participate in trekking programs than space allows. We would ask your help in selecting participants who have never been to Philmont, this will allow more individuals the opportunity to experience the magic of trekking in the Sangre De Cristo mountains of northeast New Mexico.

Please note, 2019 Philmont youth participants must be 14 years of age on date of arrival OR have completed the eighth grade and be at least 13 prior to participation. Also, each crew (7-12 participants) must have a majority of youth and is limited to a maximum of four (4) adults over 21 years of age.

Philmont strictly enforces height/weight requirements (see below) for both youth and adults to improve the health and safety of participants. Basically, a participant’s weight must be proportioned to their height.

Philmont requires that 2 members of each crew be certified in Wilderness First Aid and 2 members be certified in CPR. This could be 2 crew members with both certifications or 4 crew members with 1 certification each.

Waite Phillips scholarships will be available for 2019. Each council will be notified prior to May 2018 on funds available for use by council contingents or individual units. Please consider using the scholarships to recruit individuals from the emerging markets of your council.

Health/Medical Requirements

Each participant in a backcountry Philmont trek must not exceed the maximum acceptable limit in the weight-for-height chart below. The right column shows the maximum acceptable weight for a person's height in order to participate in a Philmont trek. Those who fall within the limits are more likely to have an enjoyable trek and avoid incurring health risks. Every Philmont trek involves hiking with a 35 to 50-pound backpack at elevations of 6,500 to 12,500 feet. Philmont recommends that participants carry a pack weighing no more than 25% to 30% of their body weight.

79 and over

This table is based on the revised Dietary Guidelines for Americans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services.

Participants 21 years and older who exceed the maximum acceptable weight limit for their height at the Philmont medical recheck will not be permitted to backpack or hike at Philmont. For example, a person 5' 10" cannot weigh more than 226 pounds.

The Philmont physicians will use their best professional judgment in determining participation in a Philmont trek by individuals under 21 years of age who exceed the maximum acceptable weight for their height. Participants under 21 years of age are strongly encouraged to meet the weight limit for their height, and exceptions are not made automatically, and the maximum allowable exception will be 20 pounds. Discussion in advance with Philmont regarding any exception to the weight limit for persons under 21 years of age is required, whether it is over or under.

Under no circumstances will any individual over 295 pounds be allowed to participate regardless of height or age. This limit is necessary due to limitations of rescue equipment and for the safety of Philmont personnel. The maximum weight for any participant in a Cavalcade Trek and for horse rides is 200 pounds.

Individuals not meeting the physical requirements for participation will not be allowed to participate, and will be sent home. This can also put a crew's participation at risk if the crew does not meet requirements for participation if the individual(s) removed were part of the required adult leadership or medical coverage. Please plan accordingly and understand that exceptions to Philmont's physical requirements will not be made.
